BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - With rain and storms expected to wreck outdoor plans throughout the Mountain State, Salem's softball team was lucky to be able to get their doubleheader against Fairmont State competed this afternoon. As expected, the conditions were wet throughout both contests, and that certainly played a role in a pair of tough losses for the Tigers to their old rivals Fairmont State. Each contest played out as follows:
Fairmont State 7, Salem 0
In Game 1, it was a slow day for the Tigers offensively as the Falcons pitchers made scoring opportunities few and far between for the Tigers. Salem had their best chance at a rally in the third when Brooke Wise knocked a double that was followed up with a pair of singles from Bella Ortiz and Kendall Lemley. However, a Falcon double play nipped the Salem rally in the bud, and the Tigers were unable to get on the scoreboard the rest of the way. Therefore, Salem fell 7-0 in Game 1. In the pitcher's circle, starter Kendall Lemley and reliever Destiny Coble combined for 2 strikeouts in the contest.
Fairmont State 5, Salem 4
In Game 2, the offensive woes continued for Salem early on, but Salem got out of their slump with a Karmen Hogan double that brought home Jazmyn Moetului to knot the game up at 1-1. Unfortunately, the Falcons added 4 runs in the 3rd, and Salem had their back against the wall. That deficit held into the final inning where Salem finally found their comeback bid. With 2 outs on the board, Brooke Wise put the Tigers back into the game with a double that scored Kaydee Anderson and Kylie Zinn to make it 5-3. Kendall Lemley then scored Wise with an RBI single to make it 5-4, and advanced to third shortly thereafter off of an Alexis Valverde single. However, the Tigers could not complete the late game theatrics, and ultimately fell 5-4. In the circle for Salem, Franchesca Alvaro and Brooke Wise combined for a total of 7 strikeouts in the game.Â
With the same rainy conditions that affected today's game changing the weekend schedule, Salem will actually not compete now until Tuesday, April 8th at Noon when they face off with the Frostburg State Bobcats at home in a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for April 6th.
