Salem Secures Home Sweep of Frostburg State

BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - Despite some unseasonably frigid temperatures, the Salem Tigers softball team hit the field this afternoon to take on the Bobcats of Frostburg State in a home doubleheader. The competition was tough, but the Tigers rode some strong pitching performances to a pair of wins over the Bobcats. Each contest played out as follows:

Salem 2, Frostburg State 1

In the first contest, we had a defensive struggle on hand for the Tigers. Frostburg State took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Salem responded in the second when Kaydee Anderson was able to score off of a passed ball from the Bobcats' catcher. From there, neither team would score for the duration of the 7 scheduled innings, so the game progressed into extras. The gridlock held into the bottom of the 9th inning. Kylie Zinn opened the inning with a single, and progressed to third on a pair of Salem groundouts. With 2 outs and the winning run at third, Alexis Valverde knocked a single into right field that secured the victory for Salem in walk-off fashion. Franchesca Alvaro went the distance in the pitcher's circle for Salem and allowed just 5 hits to earn her 6th win of the season.

Salem 8, Frostburg State 4

For Game 2, the Tigers again fell behind early 2-0. Yet, the Tigers found their answer in the 3rd. Jazmyn Moetului put Salem on the board with an RBI double, and then Kendall Lemley scored on a wild pitch. Kaydee Anderson and Kylie Zinn added RBI singles to take the lead at 4-2. The Bobcats knotted things back up at 4-4 with runs in the 4th and 5th, but Salem found another big rally in the 5th. Singles from Jazmyn Moetului, Kaydee Anderson, and Kyleigh Cook yielded Salem 4 runs in the 5th, and Salem had control of the game 8-4. The Tigers shut down the Bobcats the rest of the way to seal the 8-4 victory. Kendall Lemley earned her 10th win of the season for her 7 innings of work in which she allowed 7 hits.

The Tigers will be back in action again at home tomorrow afternoon. They are set to host the Point Park Pioneers at The Bridge Sports Complex at 1 PM on Wednesday, March 9th.
