DUBOIS, Pennsylvania- Following the opening round victory, the Salem Tigers baseball team looked to build on that momentum in their round 2 match up. The Tigers faced off against the number 1 seeded Penn State Mont Alto Nittany Lions in the second round of the USCAA Small College World Series. Salem was able to secure the victory by a final of 7-5.
For the Tigers, it was
Jackson Thoma who had the start on the mound. Mont Alto was able to get off to a big start with a homer and an error leading to a 2-0 lead after the 1
st. However,
Hunter Rose was able to answer back for Salem in the 2
ndwith a home run of his own.
Jose Lojo followed that up 2 rbi double to left center.
Ryder Costa and
Kylian Izaguirre scored on the play to give the Tigers the 3-2 advantage, as we headed into the 3
rd inning. In the top of the 3
rd,
Aaron Forbes hit a solo shot to right center to extend the Tiger lead 4-2.
Salem was able to open the game up in the top of the 5
th after a hit by pitch and multiple rbi singles led to 3 more runs. After 5 innings, Salem now had a commanding 7-2 lead. However, Mont Alto wasn't going away easy. In the bottom of the 6
th, the Nittany Lions were able to string together multiple 3 rbi singles that led to 3 more runs. As we headed into the final inning, Salem led 7-5. Fortunately, the Tigers were able to hold off the Nittany Lions to get a huge 7-5 victory. Tristian Milik was credited with his first win on the season and
Richie Preston secured his fourth save of the season.Â
After another big-time victory, the Tigers will now compete again tomorrow on May 14
th at 4 pm. Salem's opponent will be the winner of Apprentice and Penn State Dubois.
