BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - Salem University women's soccer returned to The Bridge Sports Complex on Sunday but dropped a 9-0 decision to Fairmont State in a matchup of two old WVIAC rivals.
The Falcons opened the scoring late in the first half with a penalty kick converted by Valentina Gianinetto in the 44th minute. From there, Fairmont State pulled away behind a dominant second-half attack, netting eight goals after the break. Serenity Thomas finished with two goals and two assists, while Arrington Sparks recorded a hat trick to lead the visitors.
Despite the pressure, Salem goalkeeper Janiya Brooks-Crews turned in a determined performance, registering 11 saves on 20 shots on target. Defenders Ashley Gonzalez, Britney Riley, and Nevaeh Guzman worked to hold the back line under constant pressure, while midfielders Gabriella Briceno Cajiao and Valentina Valle logged heavy minutes in the center of the pitch.
After the loss, Salem continues their home swing when they host Wheeling at The Bridge Sports Complex at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, September 24th.Â
