Salem Rallies to Split Twinbill at Concord

SALEM, W.Va. — Salem split a Saturday doubleheader at Concord, bouncing back in a big way in game two to earn a 13-10 victory after falling 5-2 in the opener.

Game 1: Concord 5, Salem 2

Salem was held to just four hits in the first game as Concord used a pair of multi-run innings to secure the win.

The Tigers struck first in the second inning when Joe Wintermute delivered an RBI single to score Reese Rinna for a 1-0 lead.

Concord responded in the third, tying the game on an RBI single before taking the lead on a sacrifice fly. The Mountain Lions added insurance in the fifth inning, plating three runs to extend the advantage to 5-1.

Salem managed to get one run back in the seventh on a solo home run from Mason Wagner, but could not generate further offense down the stretch.

On the mound, Andrew George took the loss, while Brian Kendall and Aiden Eddy combined for solid relief work to limit additional damage.

Game 2: Salem 13, Concord 10

Salem answered in explosive fashion in game two, overcoming an early deficit and outlasting Concord in a high-scoring contest.

After falling behind 5-1 in the first inning and 8-4 after two, Salem steadily chipped away. A solo home run from Tyson Shumaker in the second sparked the offense, while a two-run homer by Cody Thomas in the fourth cut the deficit to 8-6.

The Tigers took the lead in the fifth inning when Landon McAlpine launched a three-run home run, putting Salem ahead 9-8.

After Concord tied the game at 9-9, Salem delivered the decisive blow in the seventh. Aaron Forbes came through with a clutch two-RBI single, and an error allowed an additional run to score as the Tigers built a 12-9 advantage.

McAlpine led the way offensively, scoring four runs and driving in three, while Thomas and Forbes each finished with three RBIs.

Out of the bullpen, Jp Martin earned the win with 2.1 innings of work, and Richie Preston closed the door over the final three innings to secure the save.

Salem moves to 15-8 on the season following the split and will look to carry the momentum from game two into its next series.
