WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Salem University baseball team fell 7-2 on the road Tuesday afternoon despite strong individual efforts at the plate and on the mound.
After falling behind early, the Tigers settled in defensively with solid work out of the bullpen. Tristian Weimann tossed a scoreless inning in relief, and Brandon Laudermilt added two shutout frames while allowing just one hit. Andrew George and Richie Preston also delivered scoreless innings late to keep Salem within striking distance.
Salem broke through in the fifth inning when Landon McAlpine launched a solo home run to left field to put the Tigers on the board. McAlpine reached base three times on the day, finishing with a home run, two walks, an RBI, and a stolen base.
The Tigers added another run in the eighth inning. Brandon Hoftijzer led off the frame with a double down the left field line and later came around to score on a Reese Rinna RBI single through the right side.
Hoftijzer finished 1-for-5 with a double and a run scored, while Rinna went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Chase Clemons and Joe Wintermute each recorded a hit, and Jared Layfield drew two walks to help spark offensive opportunities.
Salem totaled five hits and five walks in the contest but left 10 runners on base.
