Salem Softball dropped a 9-1 decision to St. Cloud State on Saturday afternoon at the Space Coast Complex in Melbourne, Florida.
The Tigers generated their lone run in the top of the second inning. After drawing a walk and advancing on a wild pitch, Brooke Wise moved into scoring position before Alyssa Schultz delivered Salem's only hit of the game with an RBI single through the left side. Wise crossed the plate to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead, and Schultz later stole second during the inning.
St. Cloud State answered in the bottom of the second, using a two-run triple to take a 2-1 lead. The Huskies added another run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly to extend their advantage to 3-1.
Salem had opportunities to respond, drawing five walks in the contest, but the Tigers were unable to push another run across as St. Cloud State pitcher Alyssa Kunz struck out 10 batters over five innings.
In the circle, Wise made the start for Salem and worked 3.1 innings. Franchesca Alvaro came on in relief and recorded a strikeout during a scoreless appearance, while Destiny Coble also pitched in relief for the Tigers.
St. Cloud State broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning with a six-run frame, using four hits and several baserunners to secure the 9-1 final.
Schultz accounted for Salem's lone hit and RBI, while Wise scored the Tigers' only run of the afternoon.
