Salem Plagued by Slow Offensive Day at Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Salem University softball dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Fairmont State on Friday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field, falling 21-3 in game one and 5-1 in game two.

Game One: Fairmont State 21, Salem 3

Salem showed early offensive flashes but could not keep pace with a high-powered Fairmont State lineup in the opener.

The Tigers broke through in the third inning, plating all three of their runs. Junior Brooke Wise reached base to start the rally before freshman Ali Jacobs delivered an RBI double to score Wise. Freshman Ali Shrieve followed with a two-run home run to left-center, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

Jacobi Gledhill added a double in the contest, while Alyssa Schultz also recorded an extra-base hit. Jacobs finished a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI.

Despite the offensive spark, Fairmont State responded with a three-run third inning and erupted for 13 runs in the fourth to pull away. Senior Franchesca Alvaro took the loss in the circle, while junior Destiny Coble provided relief.

Game Two: Fairmont State 5, Salem 1

The Tigers bounced back with a much stronger defensive effort in game two, holding Fairmont State to five runs on five hits.

Senior Kylie Zinn led Salem offensively with two hits, while Brooke Wise and Ali Shrieve also recorded hits. Shrieve added a double, and Salem threatened multiple times but struggled to capitalize.

Fairmont State scored single runs in the first and second innings before adding three more in the sixth to extend the lead.

Salem broke through in the seventh inning when freshman Abigail Harki delivered an RBI single to score Shrieve, who had doubled earlier in the inning.

Junior Kendall Lemley went the distance in the circle, allowing five runs (four earned) while striking out three.
