Salem University Women's soccer opened their season on the road Thursday afternoon. They came up short, falling 2-1 in a hard fought battle to Mansfield University at Myers Field.
Alissa Brixander played goalie for Salem and had 5 saves while the mountaineers had 7 shots on goal in the first half. In the second half, Mansfield took another 11 shots and Brixander had 7 more saves in the second half totaling 12 saves for the game. Salem's defense, along with Brixander's effort in the net, kept the Tigers in the game.
Bailey Peck led the Tigers offensively with one shot on goal in the first half along with a second shot in the second half. Early in the second half, Emily Sullivan had a shot on goal along with Alanyss Cabrera who also had a shot on goal that hit the crossbar. Peck then put Salem on the board in the second half, kicking the ball into the lower-left corner of the net to tie the game. Gabriella Briceno Cajiao had the final shot on goal of the game for Salem but the Tigers came up short on the offensive end.
Mansfield University had a 1-0 lead going into halftime. After the Tigers tied the game 1-1 in the second half, the Mountaineers responded with a goal from Addison Emenheiser to take the lead 2-1. Mansfield's defense held off Salem's attack for the remainder of the game to secure the 2-1 victory.
Salem is back in action this weekend when they head up to Felician University on August 30th at 2 P.M.
