BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Salem University was unable to capitalize on its offensive opportunities on Sunday, dropping a 2-0 decision to Mountain East Conference foe Concord University at The Bridge. Despite outshooting the Mountain Lions 13-10, the Tigers could not solve Concord goalkeeper Iori Tanaka, who turned away all three shots on target he faced to earn the clean sheet.
Concord opened the scoring late in the first half following a competitive, defensive battle. In the 42nd minute, Neko Worthy set up Josiah Ochoa, who beat Salem goalkeeper Gregory Lynch to put the Mountain Lions ahead 1-0 heading into the intermission.
Salem pressed forward in the second half, attempting eight shots and earning four corner kicks in search of an equalizer. However, Concord doubled its lead in the 69th minute on a swift tactical strike. Off assists from substitutes Mario Bedford and Ricardo Kabwanga, Koya Nakamura found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Arokya Shrestha led the Tigers' attack with three total shots, while Josue Villegas put one of his two attempts on goal. Dylan Vaughn and Jordan Johnson also recorded two shots each for Salem. Lynch finished the match with three saves in goal for the Tigers.
With the result, Salem falls to 2-3-2 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play, while Concord improves to 4-1-2 overall and 3-1-0 in MEC action.
