Salem advances at Southern Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. (Nov. 7) – Led by a 15-goal day from sophomore Djordje Stavrevski (Pancevo, Serbia/ Sportska Gimnazjia Beograd), the Tigers went 1-2 at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championships Saturday hosted by Bucknell University.

The Salem International University water polo team was dealt losses by Johns Hopkins (17-5) and Mercyhurst (17-11), before earning a 13-11 win against Penn State-Behrend to wrap up play on Saturday.

Stavrevski, the reigning CWPA Southern Division Player of the Week, led the Tigers with three goals in the opening loss to Johns Hopkins and tallied six goals in the tightly contested 17-11 loss to Mercyhurst. The Tigers held the lead at the half against the Lakers and went into the fourth quarter tied at nine, but Mercyhurst capitalized on Salem's foul trouble to earn the victory.

In the 13-11 win over Penn State-Behrend, Stavrevski once again led the team, this time with six goals, while senior Kristopher Arnold (Markham, Ill./Bremen) added four goals in the win.

The Tigers will continue play in the Southern Division Championships tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 8 when they faceoff with Monmouth (Ill.). Salem International has split a pair of matches this season with the Scots and will open play tomorrow at 9 a.m.
