SALEM, W.Va. – The SIU water polo team took advantage of their only home matches of the season over the weekend, posting wins over Washington & Jefferson and La Salle. Djordje Stavrevski moved past Igor Milanovic into first place on the school's all-time list of goal scorers.
The Tigers began the two-day conference crossover event with a tough 13-11 setback against Mercyhurst on Saturday. Milos Popovic tallied four goals, Inigo Velasco added a pair of goals , while Robert Juhas and Paul Irving each recorded one goal. Stavrevski found the back of the net of three occasions to tie and surpass the total of Milanovic (178, 2003-05).
SIU bounced back on Sunday morning with a 23-13 win over La Salle. Stavrevski poured in 10 goals, Popovic and Marton Dudok each registered four goals, Juhas tallied a pair of goals and Aaron Sebok notched one goal.
The Tigers' offensive onslaught continued in their second match on Sunday, a 21-13 victory over Washington & Jefferson. Popovic posted nine goals, Stavrevski and Juhas each found the back of the net four times, Sebok added a trio of goals and Mateo Kozomara scored one goal.
Stavrevski scored 17 goals on the weekend. The junior from Pancevo, Serbia now has 193 goals for his career.
The Water Polo team returns to the pool on Friday in an exhibition at McKendree.
