Box Score CHARLESTON, W. Va. (Oct. 21, 2017) – The young Salem University Tigers men's soccer team continues to push its boundaries and, for 90 minutes, pushed the No. 1 ranked Division II team in the nation, taking the undefeated University of Charleston into overtime before losing 2-1 on a penalty kick.
Salem University set the tone early with an opportunistic shot on goal by
Niklas Roessler roughly 25 seconds into the match that was saved by Charleston goalie Paulo Pita.
The Tigers stood toe-to-toe, matching Charleston shot-for-shot through the rest of regulation, with both teams getting two shots in the first half and Salem holding a 6-5 advantage in shots in the second half.
Defensively, the Tigers survived a few scares, with Charleston holding a 12-2 edge in corner kicks. Goalie
Wiktor Stawski had four saves.
Charleston struck first a little more than an hour in on a goal by Freddie Tracey, his third of the season. Ten minutes later,
Federico Toschi tied the match to send it into overtime.
From there, Charleston's experience took over in overtime, getting five shots and scoring on a penalty kick from Will Roberts.
With the loss, the Tigers drop to 7-6-2 on the season while Charleston improves to 15-0. Salem has two matches remaining to clinch a winning record, starting with West Virginia University Institute of Technology on Oct. 23 and Oakland City University on Nov. 4.
