Women's basketball falls short to Indiana-East University

Tigers can't overcome a rough first quarter.

Box Score WILBERFORCE, Ohio (Nov. 12, 2017) – The Salem University Tigers women's basketball team battled back from a rough start, but didn't have quite enough in reserve on the second day of a back-to-back, losing 74-69 to Indiana-East University.

Salem shot an ice cold 5-for-19 in the first quarter, committing five turnovers to trail 12-25 at the end of the quarter.

But the bench came through in the second, stabilizing the Tigers with nine of Salem's 19 second-quarter points while the defense held Indiana-East to just seven in the quarter to pull within one at the half.

Both teams exchanged runs in the second half, with seven lead changes each in the third and fourth quarters. The Tigers' defense generated momentum, giving Salem a 12-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the third quarter to take a 50-49 lead heading into the fourth.

But after a layup by Keishla Gilmore gave the Tigers a three-point lead, their largest of the game, Indiana-East reeled off a 7-0 run, getting to the rim for three layups, including an old-fashioned three-point play on a basket and free throw from Indiana-East's Mackenzie Campbell to take the lead for good.

A driving layup from Gilmore brought the Tigers to within two, but Indiana-East closed the game on an 10-7 run to pull away for the win.

Gilmore led the Tigers with 25 points, 11 rebounds and four assists on an efficient 10-16 performance from the field, keying the Tigers' 19-8 edge in points off turnovers with a game-high four steals. Isis Mance had her second double-double in as many games, posting 20 points and 14 rebounds, shooting 50 percent from the field and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Mackenzie Campbell led Indiana-East University with 18 points and six rebounds while Tia King contributed 16 points and five rebounds.  Each player got to the free-throw line 10 times, hitting a combined 17.

With the loss, Salem starts its opening weekend 1-1 while Indiana-East remains undefeated at 5-0. The Tigers will have their home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 15 against the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (1-1). For live stats and video, click here.
