Box Score FAIRMONT, W. Va. (Dec. 13, 2017) – Short handed and on the road, the Salem University Tigers women's basketball team committed 32 turnovers in an 87-42 loss to the Fairmont State University Falcons.
The Tigers committed four turnovers within their first seven possessions and seven overall in the first quarter, giving the Falcons a 13-2 edge in the first two minutes and four 3-pointers to fall behind 25-12.
Salem's offense gave its defense little chance, stagnating at times, attempting to attack a set defense head on with no side-to-side movement, driving into a thicket of arms that led to Fairmont University's 16 steals and 34 points off turnovers.
Compounding the Tigers' troubles, the Falcons were scorching from the field with 50-40-90 shooting splits—hitting 50 percent from the field, including 12-for-29 from behind the 3-points line (41.4 percent) and 17-for-19 from the free-throw line (89.5 percent).
Fairmont's Sierra Kotchman led her team with 26 points, making the Tigers pay for every late defensive rotation, hitting 8-for-10 from deep, and the Falcons' bench outscored the Tigers' bench 33-0, led by Hope Bray's 13 points and five rebounds.
Keishla Gilmore led the Tigers with an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double, contributing three steals and hitting 6-for-13 from the field and 6-for-9 from the free-throw line.
Jillian Romero was the only other Salem player in double figures with 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting and four steals.
With the loss, the Tigers drop to 3-8 on the season. Salem University will resume play this weekend at the Salem University Holiday Invitational from Dec. 17-18, hosting Urbana University on Sunday at 6 p.m., and Seton Hill University on Monday at 4 p.m.
