Salem Tigers hold on for 2-1 against Shippensburg University

Goalie Dominic Gillespie's key save preserves the victory.

Box Score
SALEM, W. VA – Clinging to a lead late in its match against the Shippensburg University Raiders, Salem International University Tigers' goalie Dominic Gillespie made some key stops to preserve a 2-1 victory.

The Raiders attempted to rally late, putting together eight shots and four corner kicks—including three consecutive opportunities—in the second half; none more threatening than a booming shot Gillespie managed to deflect with an airborne kick at the last moment.

"I made a mistake not recruiting [Gillespie] as a striker," Tigers Head Coach Florin Marton joked. "It was a big stop."

With a second consecutive win, the Tigers improve to 2-1-2 on the season, avenging an away loss to the Raiders from last season and handing Shippensburg (1-1-2) its first loss of the year.

Shippensburg struck quickly, getting a goal from Colin Marks in the game's first two minutes. The Tigers responded with two goals in the first half from Ameen El-Shami and Niklas Roessier.

"It was a hard-fought match against a very good team," Marton said. "We fell behind 1-0 and pulled together using our offensive weapons and, in the second half, after going up 2-1, we managed to play a very intelligent, tactical game."

For the game, the Tigers recorded nine shots, including six on goal, with four saved by Raiders' goalie Matt Harder. Gillespie recorded three saves for Salem International.

The Tigers will continue their three-game homestand on Tuesday, Sept. 12, against Carlow University at 6 p.m., with another home game against Concord University on Sept. 14 at 4 p.m.
