Softball Ends Hawks Classic with Two Losses

Tigers fall to 0-4 on the season.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, N.C. (Feb. 25, 2018) – Salem University Softball's opening weekend struggles continued Sunday as the Tigers closed out the Chowan Hawks Softball Classic with a pair of losses to open the season 0-4.

Game 1 – West Chester University

Salem University's pitching struggled, giving up 15 hits and three home runs in a 12-2 loss to West Chester University. 

Casey Moritz led off the bottom of the first with a triple through the right side, scoring on a passed ball to give Salem a 1-0 lead. Emily Maseth responded in the second inning with a two-run home run for West Chester.

The Tigers tied the game on a RBI single from Jordan Whitaker, scoring Cass Alexy.

Jaime Klemas hit a two-run blast to center field in a three-run third inning for West Chester University, followed by a four-run fourth inning on four hits. West Chester added a two-run home run from Maseth in the fifth inning and Sara Ercolani hit a RBI-single to give West Chester the 12-2 lead.

Christine Bombardier (L, 0-2) started in the pitcher's circle for Salem, giving up nine runs with eight earned on 10 hits in 3.2 innings. Brianna Bennett relieved her, facing four batters and giving up two hits and two runs. Destinee Baldwin closed the game with one inning, giving up a run and three hits.

Game 2 – Chowan University

Salem gave up a six-run first inning to closeout the Hawks Softball Classic with an 8-3 loss to Chowan University.

After walking the first two batters, Rosey Romick (L, 0-2) surrendered a three-run home run to Beth Walker. A few hitters later, Miranda Glover hit a two-RBI single, then scored on Donya Salman's RBI single. Brittany Parson added two more runs in the second inning with a two-RBI single through the right side.

Salem scored three unearned runs in the third inning on an error and walk.

Romick pitched all four innings for Salem, giving up eight earned runs on 11 hits with five walks.
The Tigers will resume play on March 6 against St. Augustine's University.
