CLERMONT, Fla. (March 10, 2018) – The Salem University Tigers softball team lost in extra innings in international tie breaker rules to the West Liberty University Hilltoppers by a score of 6-4.
With a runner placed at second base to start the inning for each team, West Liberty got a walk and back-to-back RBIs from Kelsi Johnson and Kelly Mullins. Johnson hit a double to left field and Mullins singled to break the tie.
Ariana Garcia led Salem with two RBIs, belting a two-run home run to center field, scoring
Casey Moritz, who led off with a single to right field in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 lead.
West Liberty responded with two runs on three hits in the second.
Moritz reached on an error in the bottom of the second, knocking in
Morgan Atkinson; then scored on a
Tori Butler single to give Salem a 4-3 lead.
Both teams remained scoreless over the next four innings, going into the seventh, with Katie Beeman leading off with a double to left field, then getting to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kate Meloun. Sydney Bennington tied the game for the Hilltoppers with a shot up the middle.
Garcia finished 1-for-4 with the two RBIs while Moritz was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
With the loss, the Tigers drop to 0-8 on the season. West Liberty improves to 2-3.
