CLERMONT, Fla. (March 14, 2018) — Ten errors offset an explosive for the Salem University Tigers softball team in an 8-5 loss to the Ursuline College Arrows.
Casey Moritz led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple for the Tigers, then scored on Rosey Romick's groundout to second. A few batters later, Hannah Crew singled to left field, scoring Morgan Atkinson and Ariana Garcia on a subsequent error to give Salem a 3-0 lead.
Two errors produced an unearned run in the second to put Ursuline on the board.
Salem responded with two more runs in the second inning, getting an RBI single from Mortiz, who later scored on Garcia's double to center field.
The Arrows picked up two more unearned runs in the third inning on two errors to pull within 5-3; then picked up another unearned run on three errors with no hits in the fourth. Ursuline tied the game on Brooklyn Miller's RBI triple in the fifth.
The Tigers' defense misplayed back-to-back bunts to start the top of the seventh inning, committing two errors to setup Gina Rosshirt's two-RBI double to left center. Rosshirt scored an unearned run on a single to third base for the final run of the game.
Salem was just one hit off its season high with 10, producing three doubles, but left eight runners stranded on base.
Moritz finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Morgan Atkinson was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Cass Alexy was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
Christine Bombardiere started in the pitcher's circle for the Tigers, going 4.1 innings, giving up five runs, only one of which was earned on five hits and three walks. Rosey Romick pitched 2.2 innings in relief, giving up two hits and three unearned runs.
With the loss, the Tigers drop to 0-14 on the season, including 0-6 on its Florida road trip. The Arrows improve to 3-14.
Salem will finish its road trip on March 16 with a game against Wayne State University at 2 p.m., followed by a game against the University of Minnesota Crookston at 4:30 p.m.
