Softball's win streak ends with two losses against West Virginia Wesleyan College

Tigers give up big innings.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON, W. Va. (April 12, 2018) – The Salem University Tigers' winning streak came to an end, dropping two games on the road against the West Virginia Wesleyan College Bobcats.

Game 1 – Wesleyan 8, Salem 0

Wesleyan pitcher Haylee Shires pitched a complete game shutout, shutting down the Tigers' offense by limiting them to just two hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Destiney Baldwin got the start in the pitchers' circle for Salem, pitching three innings while giving up 10 hits and eight runs, with six earned.

Morgan Bruce put the Bobcats on the board first with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. The Bobcats got two more runs in the second inning, taking advantage of an error for one unearned run. Aylin Gutierrez led off the third inning with a home run as part of a four-run inning.

Christine Bombardier replaced Baldwin in the final inning, retiring three of the four batters she faced in a scoreless inning.

???????Ariana Garcia and Bombardiere each got a hit for Salem.

Game 2 – Wesleyan 10, Salem 7

With two swings, the Bobcats put a commanding seven runs on the scoreboard in Wesleyan's 10-7 victory over the Tigers.

???????Lauryn King hit a grand slam home run for Wesleyan's first runs of the game. A few batters later, Bruce hit a three-run home run as part of a seven-run third inning.

Wesleyan picked up three more runs in the fourth inning, punctuated by a two-RBI double from Krista Waggoner.

After scoring a run in the fourth inning, the Tigers' offense got on track in the fifth inning, scoring six runs. Morgan Atkinson led Salem's offense with three hits in four at-bats with a RBI and two runs scored. Garcia was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

With the losses, Salem falls to 7-21 on the season while Wesleyan improves to 24-9. The Tigers' next scheduled game is April 15 at home against Ohio Valley University.
