SALEM, W.Va. – With three members of the Salem University women's tennis team making school history last fall, the team is looking to do big things this upcoming season.
However, last season the women's tennis team was merely 1-23, but this season Tennis Head Coach
Todd Tucker's goal is to improve off last season.
"This year is no different than any other year, we want to improve from last season and if we improve our skills, we can win more than we lose," stated Tucker. "Off improving, being injury free will be huge for us and luckily we have the Head Athletic Trainer "Doctor"
Brent Walters to keep us healthy."
Salem returns three athletes in sophomore
Kristina Vuksanovic, sophomore
Brianna Vasquez and senior
Shelby Turpin.
"The difference from each of their games from last season is night and day, they have improved tremendously on and off the court. They have also led our new girls in the right direction and taught them the Salem way," added Tucker.
The Tigers added four new faces to the program this year as four of them are ranked in the NCAA Atlantic Region.
In the fall, freshman
Julia Piatek was ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Atlantic Region followed by classmate
Ana Kunic at No. 15 and freshman
Karolina Glowinska at No. 18.
The duo of Piatek and Glowinska also grabbed the No. 4 ranking in doubles.
The Tigers are one of three programs to have three girls ranked in the top 20.
Salem also adds in freshman
Iryna Rusyn from Mukachevo, Ukraine.
"I think this is the best women's team I have ever coached. Not necessarily wins and losses but everything in general from school to the court to their positive attitudes, they are the type that makes my job easier," stated Tucker.
The women had an incredible fall season and look to build upon the strong start in this upcoming spring season.
The Tigers are set for their first match Sunday against Walsh.
