LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Salem University women's water polo team was edged by Division I La Salle 11-9 and Division I Saint Francis (Pa.) 12-10.
In the first match of the day, Salem fought tough all game against La Salle as they finished just short.
Freshman
Erin Zappia scored three goals on three shots to go along with three steals, while freshman
Margherita Garibbo notched two goals and two assists.
Junior
Maryanna Antoniou and freshman
Annefleur ten Bloemendal each recorded two goals, while sophomore
Chloe Woodbine dished out three assists.
In the first period, Salem trailed La Salle just 4-3, while in the second period the Tigers scored two goals and La Salle led 6-5.
Freshman
Philippa Piper notched eight saves and four steals with 11 goals against.
In the final match of the weekend, Salem again battled strongly against Saint Francis but came up just short.
Offensively ten Bloemendal led the Tigers with four goals, while Antoniou netted three goals with one steal.
Woodbine added one goal and one assist, while freshman
Tanya Lopez garnered one goal.
In goal, Piper recorded five saves and five steals, while she added one assist.
Salem found itself down 3-1 at the end of the first period but had a very impressive second period as it outscored Saint Francis 5-1 as the Tigers led 6-4.
Heading into the final period, Salem led Saint Francis 9-7, but Saint Francis outscored the Tigers 5-1 in the fourth to take the 12-10 win.
Salem is back in the pool Friday as it is set to compete in the Mercyhurst Invite with a game against Virginia Military Institute at 8:00 p.m.
