WASHINGTON, Pa. –The Salem University women's water polo team swept two wins as it knocked off Division I Villanova 15-14 and dominated Occidental 14-4, Saturday afternoon.
In the match against Villanova, freshman
Annefleur ten Bloemendal notched a season-high eight goals with two assists on 13 shots, while freshman
Margherita Garibbo tossed in three goals and dished out three assists.
Freshman
Erin Zappia scored two goals and tallied a game-high four assists.
The Tigers held a slight 7-6 lead at the half and scored four goals in each period and in the final two periods to secure the win. Salem led 14-10 in the final period with five minutes remaining in the game after Zappia scored off an assist from freshman
Philippa Piper.
Piper finished the game with 10 saves and five steals in goal.
In the second game of the day, Salem posted an impressive showing as they dominated Occidental.
Junior
Maryanna Antoniou led the way for the Tigers as she recorded a game-high 5 goals and notched five steals, while Garibbo added four goals and two assists.
Freshman
Chloe Woodbine and Zappia each scored two goals, while freshman
Beatrice Popescu added one goal.
The Tigers controlled the game from the jump as they led 5-2 at the halfway mark. In the final two periods, they stayed dominant and exploded for seven goals in the final period.
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow as they face Gannon at 11:45 a.m. and Washington & Jefferson at 4:45 p.m.
