WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Salem University women's water polo team split the day as they fell to Gannon 12-7 and dominated Washington & Jefferson 18-1.
With the split, Salem now sits at 5-8 on the year. The Tigers collected three wins out of the four games this weekend at the Washington and Jefferson Invitational.
In the matchup with Gannon, freshman
Annefleur ten Bloemendal led the Tigers with three goals and an assist on 11 shots, while freshman
Margherita Garibbo notched two goals and an assist with two steals.
The match started in Salem's possession as freshman
Erin Zappia won the sprint. The first goal came for the Tigers with 6:47 left in the first quarter by Garibbo off an assist from freshman
Camryn Cotter as the game was tied 1-1.
Gannon outscored the Tigers 6-4 in the final two periods to secure the win.
Freshman
Philippa Piper finished the game with 14 saves.
In game two, the Tigers dominated W&J throughout the entire game. Eighteen goals are the highest amount scored this season for the Tigers.
Offensively ten Bloemendal led the way for the Tigers as she notched a game-high five goals, while Garibbo and freshman
Beatrice Popescu each tallied four goals.
Junior
Maryanna Antoniou and Zappia each tossed in two goals, while freshman
Chloe Woodbine added one goal.
In goal, Piper allowed just one score with 14 total saves.
Salem did not allow a goal until 3:58 in the fourth period. The Tigers scored a season-high seven goals in the first period, as they led 12-0 after two periods.
The Tigers added six goals in the second half to stay in total control.
The Tigers are back in action Friday as they are set to compete in the Indiana Classic as they will match up with Indiana at 7:00 p.m. Friday.
