GENEVA, Ohio –The Salem University women's water polo team defeated No. 9 seed Mercyhurst in a thrilling 7-6 match in the 2019 WWPA Championships, Saturday afternoon. 
 
 
With the win, the Tigers sit at 14-13 overall. 
 
 
The Tigers and Mercyhurst each totaled 30 shots, while Salem posted a .223 shooting percentage to Mercyhurst's .200. 
 
 
Freshman Margherita Garibbo and classmate Chloe Woodbine each tallied two goals and two assists, while freshman Camryn Cotter, junior Maryanna Antoniou and freshman Annefleur ten Bloemendal each recorded one goal, as Antoniou notched one assist. 
 
 
Salem found its self down 2-0 at the end of the first period but fought its way back as it tied the game 2-2 at the break. 
 
 
The Tigers and Mercyhurst each recorded three goals in the third period as they were knotted 5-5 heading into the final period of play. Salem outscored Mercyhurst 2-1 in the final period to secure the win. 
 
 
The win earns the Tigers a spot in the fifth-place game against No. 8 Cal State Monterey Bay at 9:30 a.m.
