Less than 24 hours after winning a pair of dual meets on the road, Salem fell to West Virginia Wesleyan College 168-79 in NCAA Division II women's swimming Saturday at Salem Pool. Friday night, the Tigers posted victories over Bethany College and Frostburg State University in a tri-meet at Bethany, W.Va.
Â
Prior to the start of Saturday's meet, Salem honored its four seniors: women's swimmer
Marta Gruszczynska and men's swimmers Gabe Craig, Milos Popovic and Michael Rojas.
Â
Gruszczynska helped stake Salem (4-4) to an early lead, combining with
Veronica Bolibaugh,
Lauren Platz and
Chloe Smart for a win in the 200 yard medley relay in Saturday's opening event. The quartet posted a time of 1:59.61 to beat out two West Virginia Wesleyan relay teams.
Â
Smart also recorded a pair of individual wins for the Tigers. She won the 50 yard butterfly and edged out teammate
Danni Lewis to win the 50 yard freestyle. Lewis recorded her first collegiate win last week in the 50 yard freestyle.
Â
Salem will be idle until mid-February when the Tigers head to Charlotte, N.C., to compete in the 2020 Conference Carolinas Championship. Salem is in its first as year as a Conference Carolinas member in swimming and is making its first-ever appearance in the Conference Carolinas Championship. The meet takes place February 12-15.
