Salem, WV – Salem University women's basketball fell against Winston-Salem State University 93-90 on Saturday at home.
The Tigers were led by Daniela Quesada with 22 points on the night followed by Nerea Arambarri Fernandez with 14 and Aleena Mongerie with 13. The Tigers shot 52 percent from the line and 40 from the field.
Both teams battled in the first quarter with the scoring being tied seven times before the Tigers went up by two after a corner three from Teyarra Johnson at the buzzer. The Tigers built their lead to five at the seven-minute mark in the second quarter after Fernandez found Mongerie on a fastbreak for two. The Rams tied it up with 30 seconds remaining before the Fernandez converted on the four-point play to take the Tigers into the half with the 49-45 advantage.
The Tigers extended their lead to seven early in the third after Mongerie forced the turnover and scored two. The Rams took the lead with seven minutes left in the quarter and continued that to go into the final quarter with the three-point lead over the Tigers. The Tigers bounced back and built up a six-point lead midway through the fourth. The Rams took the 88-87 lead with 1:28 remaining through a midrange jumper. A layup from Kendra Stanford with four seconds remaining pulled the Tigers within two before a trip to the line for the Rams secured the win for Winston-Salem State.
