On Saturday, the Cross Country teams traveled to Saint Vincent College to compete in 5K (women) and 8K (men) races.
The morning started with the women racing where they finished in 5th place with 142 points. The team was led by Asia Hines who finished in 25th place with a time of 28:28. She was followed by Sydney Gilmore, who is a Salem soccer player as well, with a time 32:02 (29th place). This was Sydney's 1st race in over 3 years. Keara Wilson was on Sydney's heels as she finished 30th with a time of 35:02. Ashia King (31st place, 35:21) and Madeline Gilmore (32nd place, 36:28, and a Salem soccer player) rounded out the times for the women's team. The Gilmore sisters joined the women's cross country team this week, and they fit in perfectly with the team. They grew up running 5Ks as their father pushed them to run at a young age.
After the women finished their race, it was the men's time to race. The team was guided through the course by Dominic Mazzariello (13th place), who ran a great race, and finished the day with a time that was 15 seconds shy of his Personal Record (PR) with a time of 29:30. Next was Anthony Cole (25th place) who had the best performance of the day, as he ran a new PR that was 2 minutes faster (30:21) than his previous best time. Anthony did this with his shoes untied, as they untied at mile 2 of a 5 mile race. Following Anthony was Alexis Toledo (38th place) who finished the race with a time of 33:22, as this was his 1st college race. Finishing up the men's team was Delmar Jeter (45th place) who ran a time of 40:12, which was 5 minutes faster than he ran in 2019 at the same race.
Coach Leonard commented about the team, "We are continuing to get better every week, and they are all doing a great job of trusting the process. Today's course was very difficult and one of the more challenging courses we will see this season. That being said, we saw some PRs today, which is amazing."
Next week the teams travel to Penn St Fayett to compete on Saturday.
