Fresno, CA – Salem University women's water polo took down Cal State East Bay in a sudden death 11-10 victory to become back-to-back Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Champions on Sunday, earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Going into the final seconds, trailing CSUEB 9-8, Chloe Woodbine scored with three seconds remaining to force overtime. The Pioneers took the one-point lead in OT, but Heather Lock answered for the Tigers to force sudden death overtime.
In the second sudden death period, Margherita Garibbo drew a penalty with 1:15 left followed by the penalty shot from Taeghen Hack to secure the 11-10 championship victory for the Tigers.
Woodbine led all scorers with four goals followed by Annefleur ten Bloemendal and Hack with two and Garibbo, Lock and Erin Zappia with one.
Goalie Philippa Piper came away with 12 saves.
