Salem, WV – Salem University Athletic Director Alex Joseph announced the hire of Florin Marton as head women's soccer coach.
Marton first came to Salem in 2000, coaching various teams on campus and teaching Physics and Physical Science. During this time, he won conference championships in both soccer and tennis and was named Coach of the Year on several occasions.
"Rebuilding the Salem University Women's Soccer Team becomes a provocation to me; it is the opportunity to do right by a group of young ladies. It is a challenge that will tap into my vast recruiting experience as we must replenish the squad with many more student-athletes. I said "we" because I am joined in this project by a dedicated and reliable pair of colleagues, my assistant coaches Sylvio Montenegro and Andre Barreto. Together I am sure that a new and better Women's Soccer Team will grace the field come the beginning of the Fall 2022 season," said Marton. "Last, but certainly not least, speaking on behalf of the soccer coaching staff, we are looking forward to providing all of our student-athletes with the best experience possible. I say "ALL", because we'll be putting through the paces both the Men and Women soccer players at Salem University. The two teams may be at different stages in their development, but they have a common goal: success on and off the soccer field with concerted and coordinated work, while having FUN!"
Marton spent 14 years playing professional soccer and was also the goalkeepers for the Romanian National Team. During his final years of his professional career, Marton earned his National Coaching License. He began his coaching career at the youth level before spending time with the CFR-Victoria Caransebes of Romanian National League.
"Florin brings a great recruiting record and has had a tremendous success previously in both Men's and Women's Soccer," said Joseph. "It was clear to us that the best candidate for this position was right here in Salem."
