Morgantown, West Virginia - Fresh off their WWPA debut sweep in Erie, the Salem men's water polo team played host to the second week of WWPA conference play at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park. Salem was more than comfortable with the home waters of Mylan Park, and they cruised through the competition for 3 strong victories. Each contest played out as follows:
Salem 24, Mercyhurst 11
In the first match of the weekend, Salem went up against the Mercyhurst Lakers for the 3rd time this season. Salem dominated both earlier performances, and this game was no different than the last 2. Cutino Award candidate Nikola Krstonosic led the Tigers with 7 goals and 3 assists. Misha Holtzkamp was next in scoring for the Tigers with 3 goals. Marko Zivojinovic was also crucial for Salem as he logged 5 assists in the contest. Between the pipes, Salem got 19 saves from Goncalo Silva. Additionally, this contest was the 100th of head coach Rob Bullion's career at Salem. He already holds the all-time wins record at Salem as well, a title he took from his father and former Salem coach and athletic director Keith Bullion.
Salem 20, McKendree 10
For Game 2 on Saturday, Salem squared off with McKendree Bearcats. The story of this contest was the 9 goal and 5 assist performance from Nikola Krstonosic. Salem controlled the contest offensively the whole way, and Krstonosic played his role in the offense with distinction. Marko and Ivan Zivojinoivc also had strong performances with 4 goals and 3 goals, respectively. In the cage, Salem got a 13 save performance from Duarte Costa.
Salem 21, Gannon 13
For the final game of the weekend on Sunday, Salem squared off with Gannon for the second time this season. Prior to the game, Salem's Senior Day festivities were held. Salem's offense did not miss a beat from their white hot performances on Saturday, and easily cruised to a 21-13 win. Marko Zivojinovic added 9 goals and Nikola Krstonosic added 7 goals. In goal, Duarte Costa and Goncalo Silva split the game, and contributed a combined 14 saves. This game also cemented Nikola Krstonosic's handle on the school record for goals in a season which was previously set at 106.Â
With this successful weekend wrapping up the regular season for the Tigers. Salem launches into post season play on November 17th through the 19th in Lebanon, Illinois for the WWPA Conference Championship hosted by McKendree. Salem has locked in the #1 seed from the East Region, so they have earned a first round bye for the tournament. They will face the winner of Concordia University-Irvine and Gannon on November 18th at 11 AM Central Time.
