SALEM, West Virginia - In unison with the Salem men's tennis team, the Salem women's tennis team opened their season last week with 4 straight competitions in the state of Pennsylvania. The women's team was able to earn a 3-1 record from those contests, and they played out as follows.
Mercyhurst 5, Salem 2
In the first contest of the season, Salem found some strong play in the doubles pairings of Lina Ziani with Anatasia Gerter and Kylie Diaz with Melanie Coric. On the singles side, Ana Gerter was able to earn the lone Salem singles win. Therefore, Mercyhurst came away with the 5-2 win over the Tigers.
Salem 7, Edinboro 0
In the next contest against Edinboro, Salem had a dominant performance. Salem swept through the singles competition, and lost just one of the 3 matchups in the doubles contests on their way to an impressive 7-0 win.
Salem 6, Millersville 1
For the third matchup of the season, Salem struggled somewhat in the doubles matchups with only the Gerter/Ziani partnership getting a win. However, Salem made up for it on the singles side. The Tigers swept through the Edinboro team, and earned all 6 individual wins with particularly impressive play from Ana Kunic and Daria Korsakova.
Salem 4, Bloomsburg 3
In the final contest of this section of the schedule, Salem found themselves in a very tight matchup. Salem dropped the doubles side of the competition with just the Gerter/Ziani pairing winning again. However, Salem roared back in the singles competition with Ana Kunic, Anatasia Gerter, Lina Ziani, and Kylie Diaz each earning individual wins to give the Tigers a slight edge over Edinboro.
With this impressive start, Salem will be energized for the next portion of their schedule. The women's tennis team will be in action next time down in Florida against Rollins College on February 28th at 3 PM.
