Tigers Have Huge Weekend at Harvard Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts- After a week-long break, the Salem Tigers men's water polo team were back in action over the weekend for the Harvard Invite. Salem was able to have a successful weekend sweeping the event during the four games over the weekend.

Salem 19, LIU 16

The Salem Tigers started things off on Saturday afternoon with a match up against the LIU Sharks. LIU was able to start off with the slight lead of 5-4 after the first quarter. However, the Tigers were able to take the lead back heading into halftime due to a big second quarter from Marko Zivojinovic. The Tigers held a 11-8 lead at halftime against the Sharks. LIU was able to go on a 5-2 run in the third period knotting it up at 13-13 heading into the fourth. Salem was able to outscore LIU 6-3 with 5 of those goals coming from Marko Zivojinovic. The Tigers would end up taking the first game 19-16.

Salem 22, Chapman 15

The Salem Tigers would take on Chapman University in the second game of the day. Both teams would start out slow in the first quarter with Salem having the 3-2 advantage heading into the second quarter. The Tigers outscored Chapman 7-5 in the second quarter, with 3 of those goals coming from Nikola Krstonosic. At the half, the Tigers would lead 10-7. In the third quarter, the Tigers were able to take full control of the game by extending their lead to 17-11. Ivan Zivojinovic and Marko Zivojinovic were both able to score 3 goals in the third quarter. The Tigers were able to control the fourth quarter and end up taking the game 22-15.

Salem 25, Mount St. Mary's 17

After two games on Saturday the Tigers would get things started off early on Sunday morning taking on Mount St. Mary's. The Tigers had a solid first quarter with a 7-5 lead after one. Tigers would go on a 6-4 run in the second to extend their lead. At the half, the Tigers held a 13-9 lead. Salem was able to outscore Mount St. Mary's 7-6 in the third period. Heading into the fourth, the Tigers held a 20-15 lead. Salem had complete control of the game at this point and was able to outscore Mount St. Mary's 5-2 to close out the game. Nikola Krstonosic led the way with 9 goals of his own. The Tigers would end up taking game 3 by a score of 25-17.

Salem 13, Bucknell 12

Heading into the final game of the Harvard Invite Salem went head-to-head vs Bucknell University. The game started out slow with Salem having the slight edge after the first period with a score of 2-1. The Tigers were able to outscore Bucknell 5-4 in the second quarter. Salem held a 7-5 lead heading into the half. In the third, both teams scored 3 goals of their own giving the Tigers a 10-8 lead heading into the final quarter of play. Bucknell fought back in the fourth with a 4-3 run but it wasn't enough as the Salem Tigers were able to win by a narrow victory of 13-12. Danko Kesic and Nikola Krstonosic both led the Tigers with 3 goals each.
 
After an impressive weekend, Salem will have a break before they have a chance to build on this momentum when they play in the WWPA Erie Weekend starting off on October 26th at 10 AM.
