Salem Claims Second Win from Tough Competition in Providence

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island - The Salem Tigers Women's Water Polo team headed up to Providence for an extended weekend event hosted by NCAA Division I and Ivy League member Brown University. The Tigers took on host Brown on Friday evening, Siena and Austin College on Saturday afternoon, and Long Island Sunday morning. Salem ended up 1-3 on the weekend, and each game played out as follows:

Brown 14, Salem 7

For the first contest of the weekend, Salem took on the host Brown Bears. Brown flexed their home pool advantage to take an early 3-0 lead, but the Tigers responded with a pair of their own to make it 3-2 after the first. However, Brown took control of the contest with a big second quarter to make it 9-5 after a half. In the second half, Salem needed to find a new gear offensively to get back into it. However, they were unable to do so despite a valiant effort and ended with a tough 14-7 loss to Brown. On the scoresheet, Salem was led by Taeghen Hack, who dropped in 3 of Salem's goals.

Salem 19, Austin 8

In the second contest of the weekend, Salem found their best offensive performance so far in this young season for the Tigers. The first 2 quarters featured a lot of back and forth play that ended in Salem up 3 at the half, but an impressive 9 goal 3rd quarter gave Salem a stranglehold on the contest. Salem then added 2 more insurance goals in the 4th to seal the 19-8 victory over the Kangaroos. Leading the Salem offensive attack was JoJo DeSalvo with 5 goals in the contest.

Siena 9, Salem 7

After the offensive showcase of the Austin College matchup, Salem settled into a very different sort of ballgame on Saturday evening. Salem and Siena had a defensive battle on their hands from the opening whistle. The Tigers fell behind early, but outscored Siena 5-2 in the second and third periods to make it 6-6 heading into the 4th. Despite the big rally, it would be Siena who found the 4th quarter goals to take advantage, and Salem fell 9-7 in their tightest matchup of the season. Statistically, Salem was led by Taeghen Hack and Courtney Repinz who each had a pair of Salem's goals in the contest.

Long Island 22, Salem 6

In the final matchup of the weekend, Salem had a rematch against Long Island. The Tigers fell to this same opponent while competing at the Michigan Invitational, and, unfortunately, this contest ended in a similar way. Salem found the offensive chances difficult to come by from the opening whistle, so they fell behind early in the first half. Salem responded in the 2nd half with a valiant effort at a comeback, but it was too little too late. Ultimately, Long Island pulled away with the 22-6 victory over the Tigers. From the scorer's table, Salem was led offensively by JoJo DeSalvo, who finished with 3 goals.

After three straight weekends of multi-game stretches, Salem took a bit of a break this weekend with a more straightforward matchup. They travel over to Lexington, Virginia to take on the Keydets of the Virginia Military Institute at 11 AM on Saturday, February 10th.
