PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania - Ahead of the opening weekend of WWPA play, the Salem women's water polo team took the opportunity to face off with one more non-conference opponent, namely the Wildcats of Villanova.
In a rare 9 AM start for the Tigers, Salem kept the game close early. JoJo DeSalvo opened the scoring for the Tigers, but the Wildcats quickly jumped out to an early lead. Salem battled back with a pair of goals in the 2nd quarter, but they still trailed 14-3 at the half.Â
For the second half, Salem had a long way to go in order to push their way back into the game. They got good start with Emma Donnelly scoring the 3rd, and MAckenzize Hamilton and Taeghen Hack adding to that rally in the 4th. However, it would not be enough for the Tigers to overcome the Wildcat advantage. Salem ultimately was sent home with the 20-6 loss.
Statistically, Taeghen Hack led the Tigers with 2 goals and 2 assists. Emma Donnelly added a goal and a pair of assists as well. In goal, Salem got a strong 12 saves from Emily Low.Â
As previously mentioned, this is the final non-conference game for the Tigers before the start of WWPA play. Salem will begin WWPA play on March 23rd and 24th when they head to Lebanon, Illinois to face off with rivals Gannon, Mercyhurst, and host McKendree.
