DUBOIS, Pennsylvania - As the spring season winds to a close, the Salem University Softball team headed up to Dubois, Pennsylvania to compete in the USCAA Small College World Series. The event began on Sunday evening with the Home Run Derby, and the announcement of the yearly awards for the whole USCAA softball season. Charlee Johnson competed well for the Tigers in the derby, and 4 other Tigers were honored with USCAA All-American honors. Each of those awards are as follows:
Sierra Chapa - USCAA All-American 2nd Team
In her regular outfield position for the Tigers, Sierra Chapa has been an anchor for the Tigers this season in the field and at the plate. A regular in the leadoff spot, Chapa leads the team in batting average with .358 and hits with 48. She has also been a top player for the Tigers defensively, and has logged only 2 errors this season out in right field.Â
Meladie LaRance - USCAA All-American Honorable Mention
Meladie LaRance has also earned these national accolades thanks to her strong performance on the field this season. LaRance leads the team in RBIs this year with 26 to date, and has been a stalwart for the Tigers out in center field.Â
Ricki Garay - USCAA All-American Honorable Mention
The next Tiger honored in Dubois on Sunday was 2nd baseman Ricki Garay. Garay is currently hitting .250 with 29 hits and 22 RBIs this year, and has been a critical part of the important middle infield positions for the Tigers all season.Â
Kayla Williams - USCAA All-American Honorable Mention
The final Tiger honored was freshman Kayla Williams. Williams has had a spectacular debut campaign for the Tigers, and has shown her true colors as a utility player for Salem this season. She has spent considerable time for the Tigers in both left field, and as a pitcher.Â
These postseason accolades should give the Tigers some extra energy as they head into their first game at the USCAA Small College World Series today. They are set to take on Penn State-Dubois at Noon in the first round of that event.Â
