GENEVA, Ohio — Salem University men's water polo opened WWPA Championship play on Saturday but was unable to keep pace with a high-powered UC Merced attack, falling 19–7 at the SPIRE Aquatics Center.
The Tigers started strong offensively, posting three goals in the opening quarter and staying within striking distance early. Antonio Sablic led Salem with two goals, while Zsomber Fulop, Timothy Fischer, Gabriel Balmelle, Danko Kesic, and Medun Arsovic each added one goal to round out the scoring.
Salem generated quality looks throughout the match, but a scoreless second period created a gap the Tigers struggled to close. UC Merced capitalized on its opportunities, building separation during the middle quarters.
In goal, Ewan Rios made several tough stops and recorded two saves, battling against a relentless Bobcats offense.
The Tigers close out play at the WWPA Tournament with ta contest against he McKendree Bearcats tomorrow morning at 8 AM in Geneva.
