SALEM, W.Va. (Sept. 19) – Sophomore
Djordje Stavrevski (Pancevo, Serbia/Sportska Gimnazjia Beograd) set the school's single-game scoring record, as the Tigers split a pair of contests Saturday afternoon, defeating Monmouth (Ill.) 21-19, after falling to Washington & Jefferson 11-6 in an earlier match.
The Salem International University water polo team moves to 1-3 this season, 0-1 in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) play. The match with Monmouth did not count towards CWPA standings.
Stavrevski notched 12 goals to help lead the team to a 21-19 win over Monmouth, including six in the fourth quarter. He previously held the single-game record when he scored 11 times against Monmouth nearly a year to the date on Sept. 20.
Sophomore
Chad Doerrman (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) added three goals, all in the final frame, to help the Tigers hold off a late charge by the Scots. Salem International held a 20-16 with just over five minutes remaining in the contest, when they were forced to play the remainder of the match a man-down due to player ejections.
"That was the most resilient effort that I have ever been a part of," Head Coach Rob Bullion said. "Despite being a man down, they continued to show grit and willed us to that victory. I'm really proud of the team."
Salem International opened the day with an 11-6 loss to Washington & Jefferson. Senior
Kristopher Arnold (Markham, Ill./Bremen) led the scoring for the Tigers with three goals and added eight saves over two periods in net. Freshman
Andrew Perry (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon) added two saves in two quarters of play in net as well.
Stavrevski chipped in two goals and two assists, while freshman
Inigo Velasco (Madrid, Spain/Colegio San Agustin) and redshirt-freshman
Mike Roake (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) each added one goal apiece. Redshirt-freshman
Marton Dudok (Budapest, Hungary/Szinyei Merse Pal) also contributed an assist in the loss.
The Tigers are back in the pool next Saturday, Sept. 26 when they head to Erie, Pennsylvania for a trio of CWPA matches. Salem International will take on Gannon at noon and Mercyhurst at 4 p.m. The Tigers will remain in Erie to take on Penn State-Behrend on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 11:30 a.m.
