BRONX, NY - Despite receiving five goals from junior
Djordje Stavrevski, the Salem International men's water polo squad dropped a 14-9 decision to Fordham University on Saturday night (Oct. 29) in collegiate water polo action.
The Tigers (7-12) will stay on the road as they face Iona Sunday morning at 11 am. SIU will travel to Erie, Pennsylvania on Saturday, November 5 as they face Monmouth College in the MWPC Western Region Championships. The Tigers will look to advance to the MWPC Championships which will be hosted by Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, November 18-20.
Fordham (13-11) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after the first quarter of action on Saturday. Six different Rams would tally goals, while goalkeeper Alex Johns made four saves in net.
Salem International would respond with the first score of the second quarter as freshman
Robert Juhas cut the deficit to 6-1 less than a minute into play. Stavrevski tallied his first goal of the contest with 3:24 remaining in the second quarter to trim the Rams' lead to 7-2. Juhas scored his second goal with 2:13 left in the second quarter, but Fordham would score back-to-back goals in the final 1:12 to extend their lead to 10-3.
The Tigers used the intermission to their favor, scoring three times in the third quarter to cut the Fordham lead to 11-6. Juhas started the scoring for the Tigers at the 5:43 mark, picking up his second goal of the night. After allowing Fordham to score and take a 11-4 lead, Stavrevski notched back-to-back goals to make it an 11-6 contest. Sophomore goalkeeper
Andrew Perry stopped four of the five shots that he faced in the third quarter for the Tigers.
Both teams would score three goals in the fourth quarter of play. Juhas and Stavrevski each scored a goal for Salem International along with sophomore
David Roake, who's score with 6:43 remaining cut the deficit to 12-7. After falling behind 14-7, the Tigers tallied a pair of goals to make it 14-9 before the final buzzer.
Perry made nine saves on the night for Salem International, while Johns made seven saves through three quarters of play. R.J. Simmons paced the Rams with fours goals in the contest. Jake Miller-Tolt, Tristen Knoflick, Cameron Shewchuck, and Diego Delgado each tallied two goals for Fordham.
