ERIE, Pa. (Nov. 4, 2017) – The Salem University Tigers men's water polo team split its two matches on the first day of the MWPC Western Region Championship, falling to the third-place game on Sunday.
With a trip to the championship game on the line, Salem and Mercyhurst University went to overtime and beyond before the Tigers lost 17-16 on a sudden death goal by Mercyhurst's Daniel Alvarez.
Salem started the match with a 4-2 first quarter, but Mercyhurst whittled away at that, scoring a 5-4 second quarter and 4-3 fourth after each team scored two in the third quarter.
Marton Dudok led the Tigers with five goals, scoring three in the first overtime to keep the Tigers afloat before sudden death.
Michael Rojas and
Djordje Stavrevski scored three each for Salem. Goalie
David Romero finished with 14 saves.
In their first match of the day, the Tigers defeated McKendree University 14-10.
Milos Popovic led the Tigers with six goals and Stavrevski had three. Romero finished with 12 saves.
