Women's basketball swept in Manchin Classic

Tigers outscored all four quarters.

SALEM, W. Va. (Dec. 10, 2017) — The Salem University Tigers women's basketball team suffered its worst loss of the season, falling 94-52 to the Central State University Marauders on the second day of the Joe Manchin Classic. 

Turning to season-long bench players to field a starting lineup for the game, the Tigers' showed a lack of continuity, committing 11 turnovers in the first quarter, giving Central State University a 17-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the first 10 minutes, falling behind 24-14. 

As familiar lineups worked their way into the game from the second quarter on, the sloppiness continued, committing 29 turnovers for the game, giving up 42 points off turnovers. (The Tigers force just 10 turnovers, scoring three points). 

Keishla Gilmore was the only Salem University player to score in double figures, leading the Tigers with 20 points off the bench. Gilmore also contributed six rebounds, four assists and three steals, but committed four turnovers. 

Christy Gonzalez, starting at center, contributed eight points (on 4-for-10 shooting), five rebounds and two blocks. 

Four players scored in double figures for the Marauders, led by Jaeda Davis' 21 points on 8-for-15 shooting, including 2-for-5 from the 3-point line. Sierra Harley was second on the team with 20 points, six rebounds and six assists. 

Central State University shot just 3.2 percent from the field but took 36 more shots (89-53), out-rebounding the Tigers 48-32, including 24 offensive rebounds—outscoring Salem University 18-5 in second-chance points. 

The Tigers will travel to Fairmont State University on Dec. 13 for a game at 7 p.m., then return home to host the Salem University Tournament, with games against Urbana University and Seton Hill University on Dec. 17-18.
