CHARLESTON, W. Va. (Feb. 25, 2018) — The Salem University Tigers men's tennis team defeated West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets 8-1, matching its win total from last season just eight matches into the season.
Patryk Garwacki and Gregor Lanier set the tone for Salem, making quick work of Noah Fulks and Dylan Jayasuriya with an 8-0 shutout. Andres Padilla and Carlos Padilla followed with an 8-1 victory over Zach Fraley and Jacob Stanley, and Ivan Arevalo and Landon Schultz defeated
Adam Walters and Baylee Vankirk 8-1.
Working from the No. 1 spot, Garwacki downed Caleb Starkey with a pair of 6-1 sets while Lanier shutout Fulks.
Arevalo showed off great shot selection, moving his opponent back-and-forth to take his match against Ethan Cross in two sets (6-0, 6-2). Andres lost a grueling match to Jayasuriya, staging a late rally before falling short in three sets (6-2, 1-6, 10-8).
His brother, Carlos, had an easier time with Stanley, winning 6-0, 6-1. Shultz-Zwar closed out the evening with a pair of quick 6-0 victories for Salem to improve to 3-5 on the season and 3-0 at neutral locations.
