FAIRMONT, W. Va. (Feb. 27, 2018) – For four hours, the Salem University Tigers men's tennis team went head-to-head with the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons—the reigning Mountain East Conference regular season champions—before falling shot 5-4 on the road.
Carlos Padilla and
Andres Padilla took a tough 8-0 loss to Guilherme Pachane and Dillon Early to start doubles competition.
Patryk Garwacki and
Gregor Lainer fought hard, but fell short 8-6, while the pairing of
Ivan Arevalo and Landon Shultz-zwar put the Tigers on the scoreboard with an 8-5 win.
Garwacki got off to a quick start in singles competition, winning the first set 6-2, then held on to win the second 6-4. Lainer went the distance with Guilherme Pachane, losing 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
After losing his first set against Matias Higueras, Arevalo rallied to win the next two sets 6-2 and 6-4. His doubles partern, Shultz-zwar, had similar success, winning in two sets (6-2, 6-2).
Andres Padilla struggled in his match with Joao Martins, losing in two sets (6-0, 6-1) and
Carlos Padilla lost to Dillon Early 6-4 and 6-0.
With the loss, Salem fell to 3-6 on the season, with all six losses coming on opponents' homecourts and a 3-0 record on neutral courts.
Salem will hit the road on March 2 to play Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina before traveling to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina to play in the Hilton Head Spring fest from March 4-9.
