LEXINGTON, Ohio (Feb. 3, 2018) – The Salem University Tiger Tennis teams had a successful season opener with the men and women's teams combining to outpace Mount Vernon Nazarene University 12-6.
The men's team went undefeated, winning all nine matches, and the women's team went 3-6 on the day.
Carlos Padilla and
Andres Padilla won a tough-fought doubles match 8-5 and the tandems of
Ivan Arevalo and
Landon Schultz-Zwahr and
Patryk Garwacki and
Gregor Lainer were flawless in their doubles matches, each winning 8-0.
In singles, after losing the first set 3-6,
Carlos Padilla rallied to win the next two by scores of 6-3.
Andres Padilla won his match 6-0 and 6-2. Garwacki, Arevalo, Lainer, and Schultz-zwahr each put together shutouts, winning 6-0 in all sets.
"The men were extremely focused and worked very hard on all courts tonight," Head Coach
Todd Tucker said. "Anytime you travel and play a road match it's very tough to keep your composure and the men were very, very disciplined."
On the women's side,
Kristina Vuksanovic and
Anna Kovalova won their doubles match 8-2 while
Waverly Federico and
Megan Perez lost 8-4 and
Brianna Vasquez and
Jennifer Perez lost 8-5.
The women split their singles matches 2-2, getting victories from Vuksanovic (6-0, 6-3) and Kovalova (6-0, 6-1).
"I was extremely proud of the women tonight," Tucker said. "They fought all the way to the finish, never giving up on one single point.
"Both teams represented Salem University well on and off the court and we are all excited for the future."
The tennis teams will resume play today against the University of Findlay in Lexington, Ohio at the Lakewood Racquet Club today at 4:30 p.m.
