Salem (10-11, 4-2 MAWPC) is playing for the first time since hosting the CWPA Divison II Eastern Region Championship two weeks ago. The Tigers were tournament runners-up after splitting their first two games and then taking Gannon to overtime before falling 14-13. Tiger senior
Milos Popovic was named Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Popovic became the MAWPC all-time career goal scoring leader last month and enters this weekend's tournament with 304 career goals. Popovic leads the Tigers with 66 goals on the season, including 31 goals in his last six games.
Salem is 2-0 against Washington and Jefferson this season, defeating the Presidents 21-8 in September and 24-13 in October.
A Salem win in its first-round game advances the Tigers to the semifinal round at 5 p.m. against the winner of No. 2 seed McKendree University and No. 7 seed Monmouth College (Ill.). A first-round loss would put Salem in the fifth-place game Sunday at 9 a.m. The Tigers were the runners-up in last year's MAWPC-West Region Tournament.
The MAWPC-West Region Championship Game is slated for Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The tournament champion advances to the MAWPC Championship against teams from the MAWPC-East Region. That winner earns a bid to the NCAA Men's Water Polo Championship.
