Men's And Women's Swimming Top West Virginia Tech In Season Opener

The magic numbers are 223 and 3: 223 days between Salem University athletics competitions and three consecutive Tiger wins dating back to March.

Both the Salem University men's and women's swimming teams were victorious as the Tigers competed against West Virginia Tech in a dual meet Friday at the YMCA of Southern West Virginia in Beckley, W.Va. The Tigers won the men's meet 123-56 and won the women's meet 98-55.

Event Results

Friday's dual meet was the first intercollegiate competition by any Salem athletics team in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Salem announced in August that fall sports competition is postponed until after January 1. The NCAA classifies men's and women's swimming as winter sports.

Salem will play host to West Virginia Tech in a rematch January 9 at Salem Pool. The meet will also be the Tigers' Senior Day.

The Tigers are tentatively scheduled to play host to Fairmont State University November 13 in Salem's home opener. The status of the meet is unclear after the Mountain East Conference, of which Fairmont State is a member, announced two weeks ago that winter sports will not begin until at least January 1.

The last Salem intercollegiate competition prior to Friday took place March 13 when the Tiger women's tennis team defeated Slippery Rock University 4-3.
