Regional No. 10 Men's Tennis Rallies Past Bloomsburg 4-3 In Season Opener

Gianfranco Germinara fought back from a first-set loss to spark a team rally from an early deficit as regionally 10th-ranked Salem University opened the 2020 season with a 4-3 victory over Bloomsburg University in NCAA Division II men's tennis Friday at Morgantown, W.Va. The match was played at the indoor courts at Summit Tennis Academy.

Salem (1-0) fell behind 1-0 after dropping a pair of doubles matches. After losing the first set 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Germinara evened the match with a 6-3 win in the second set and pulled away for a 6-2 win in the third set.

Straight-set wins by Emmanuel Mallya at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0) and Anas Haddou at No. 3 singles (7-5, 6-0) gave Salem a 3-1 lead. The Tigers clinched the team win on Jose Marino's 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles. Bas de Waal and Federico Urciuoli finished up the match at Nos. 5 and 6 singles.

Bloomsburg (2-4) had already played three dual matches in the fall and two matches in February coming into Friday's contest.

Salem begins its Spring Break trip Friday at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. The Tigers then travel to Hilton Head Island, S.C. to compete in the PTR Spring Tennis Fest.
