MORGANTOWN, West Virginia - Yesterday, the Salem men's water polo team took on NCAA Division I Fordham, who is currently ranked 2
nd in their conference. Currently the Tigers are ranked 5
th out of 11 in the Mid Atlantic Water Polo Conference behind all Division I teams such as George Washington, Fordham, Bucknell and Mount St. Mary's. The matchup between the Rams and the Tigers was bound to be a good show on the Tiger's home soil in Morgantown.
Â
During the first half, Fordham came out with a strong offense and scored 10 goals. However, Salem matched their energy putting up 7 goals against the Rams. A 3-goal lead for Fordham was not enough to shut the Tigers down, who were persistent in their offense. The second half showed just how evenly matched these teams were as each of them scored 7 goals. Fordham's 3 goal lead in the first half however put them in front of the Tigers with an end score of 17 – 14 to the Rams. This is not a loss the team will be upset about, though. To have such a close score with a team that is 2
nd on the table in their conference should give our tigers great confidence and motivation for their next conference match ups.
Â
Offensively, the game was led by
Nikola Krstonosic who scored 4 goals for the tigers and had 2 assists.
Chad Rowley and
Ivan Zivojinovic each put up 3 goals. Ivan also had 4 assists and two drawn exclusions, Chad had 3 steals and 2 blocked shots to add.
Marko Zivojinovic added 2 goals, 3 assists and 7 drawn exclusions.
Julen Alonso also had a great day in the cage with a total of 21 saves. A great performance from our Tigers yesterday, who are in great contention for their two matches today against Division I programs Wagner and United States Naval Academy.
