Salem University Hall of Famer, Jack Deloplaine Passes Away

Legendary Salem University running back Jack Deloplaine passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2022.

While a student at Salem, he received numerous honors, including the 1975 West Virginia Amateur Athlete of the Year, NAIA All-American and was the Tigers offensive MVP.  Deloplaine was also named an AP College Division All-American and was a four-time All-WVIAC selection.

Deloplaine graduated in 1976 and was selected in the sixth round of the National Football League Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers and was a member of the Super Bowl XIII champion team. He had brief stints with the Washington Redskins, Chicago Bears and the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts.

As a Pennsylvania native, he was a fan-favorite in Pittsburgh. He was well known for his hard-nosed running style and special teams play. He earned the nickname "Hydroplane" because of his ability to run the ball well in any type of weather.

Jack was selected to the Salem University Hall of Fame in 1998.

After retirement, Deloplaine participated in Steelers charity basketball events and made guest appearances for the Special Olympics and Kenny Rogers' "America" television special.

Deloplaine, who is also a member of the Pottstown, Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, is the namesake for Salem University's "Jack Deloplaine Leadership Award", which is presented annually to an athlete who embodies athletic spirit, achievement and leadership.

"The news of Jack's passing has hit the University community hard. We are committed to honoring his memory, contributions, and family", stated Dr. Karen Ferguson, Interim President.

"We are saddened by the news and send the best to his family and friends," said Athletic Director Alex Joseph. "Jack was a great Salem Tiger who always cared for and loved his university".
