LEWISBURG, Maryland - Looking to make some improvements off their split in yesterday's contest, the Salem men's water polo program had an excellent chance to do just that as they were slated for another doubleheader today. They faced off with Mount St. Mary's for the second time this season in the morning contest, and then they had a tough task in front of them in the form of the Fordham Rams, the defending conference champion, in the afternoon contest. Salem played well in both contests, and would earn another split. They defeated Mount St. Mary's 20-9, but fell to the Rams 21-12. The games played out as follows:
Salem 20, Mount St. Mary's 9
In game 1, the Salem offensive attack came alive as they controlled the contest from the start as they found the back of the net early and often. The fast paced and controlling play proved too much for Mount St. Mary's, and the Tigers cruised to their first conference win of the season. Marko Zivojinovic led the Tigers offensively with 7 goals, and Duarte Costa played well for the Tigers in goal with 8 saves.
Fordham 21, Salem 12
In game 2, Salem had a tough matchup ahead of them. Undaunted, the Tigers jumped out to an early lead as they led the Rams 6-5 after the first period. Unfortunately, the Rams defense gave the Tigers fits as they could not find very many scoring chances down the stretch. Fordham would ride that defense to the 21-12 win. On the stats sheet for the Tigers, Nikola Krstonosic led the way offensively with 5 goals. Duarte Costa and Tyrese Clement added 6 saves between them in the cage for the Tigers.Â
The Salem men's water polo team will get back into the water next weekend as they head up to Erie, Pennsylvania for the MWPC Crossover on September 24th where they are slated to take on Bucknell at 10:20 AM, and then will rematch with Johns Hopkins at 3:40 PM.
